Religion is for those not strong enough to bear the weight of uncertainty: that the universe is unfeeling and largely nonsensical, that order is the structure we superimpose on it with the filter of our prescribed and wishful perceptions. Morality is contrived primarily to help people feel not quite so powerless in the face of overwhelming chaos. Not to put too fine a point on it—convictions are for cowards.
